Zangenberg umbrella catalogue of 1935



Since 1860 Zangenberg was specialized in the production of umbrellas - rainumbrellas at first and sunnumbrellas at last. The most important stages of the history of Zangenberg in a brief summary:


1800: At the beginning of 19.th century Johann Christian Zangenberg produces at Krahnstraße 21 in Osnabrueck artful prim walkingsticks and knobs for umbrellas. His eldest sun Heinrich Zangenberg founds on 01. oktober 1860 a company at große Hamkenstraße 1 to produce sunumbrellas and rainumbrellas.


1906: the production capacy at große Hamkenstraße was getting tight due to the growing umbrella industry and a new factory building was built at Kollegienwall 12c. In the following years it needet to be enlarged continously.

 

The Knirps Taschenschirmes was invented in the twenties and started its success story. Zangenberg was a decicive part of this inventions and one of the licenceholder beside several other umbrella factories in germany.


The second world war shattered a lot of hope and plans. The factory was completely destroyes in 1945 and Christian Zangenberg was facing the ruins of his work. Together with his sun Erich Zangenberg the factory was rebuilt.

 

A modern umbrella factory embellshed on a grand scale during the years 1959-1961 at Industrigebiet Fledder. To this time it was more than likely one of the most advance umbrella factories of the worls. In the sixties his son Horst Heinrich Zangenberg stepped into the factory as the fourth generation.

 

In the middel of the 1960: Zangenberg hired more than 400 workers. Every year 1,1 million rainumbrellas are produced. The range of products is the collapsible umbrella Knirps, walking-stick umbrellas for men, stylish rainumbrellas and gardenumbrellas. With the raise of imports of rainumbrellas the production in germany started to be more difficult. In 1965 the number of imports of rainumbrellas to germany exceeded 2,3 million pieces.

 

 

Horst Heinrich Zangenberg recognized the situation and started re restructure the production to focus on the production and sales of high quality sunumbrellas. During the following years the company focused on inventing new umbrella systems and at that time also the market umbrella Palma was built. Today this umbrella is still in the market and a steady partner for many gastronomers.


In 1998 a new company building was set up in Wallenhorst close to Osnabrück. At this time Ralf Zangenberg in 5. Generation steps in the company. In 2010 the company celebrates 150-years anniversary. Today we produce a broad range on high quality sunumbrellas, cantilever umbrellas and giant umbrellas for commercial customers. Also you can see special shading solutions such as freestanding awnings and pergolas.
