As the season ends: preparing sun umbrellas for winter
As autumn arrives, the use of outdoor spaces begins to change. Terraces, gardens and hospitality areas are used less frequently – and for sun umbrellas, this marks an important phase: preparing for the winter months.
Wind, moisture and frost can place lasting strain on materials and mechanics if umbrellas remain unprotected. Proper preparation at the end of the season plays a key role in maintaining functionality and appearance over time.
Why a proper season shutdown matters
Sun umbrellas are designed for outdoor use, but they benefit significantly from targeted care before winter. Depending on location, usage and construction, requirements can vary.
Whether cleaning, protection or storage – taking the right steps at the end of the season helps extend service life and ensures the umbrella is ready for use again in spring.

ContinueShade solution for a hotel terrace at the North Sea – a real-world project
Requirements for reliable outdoor shading are particularly high at the North Sea. Wind, changing weather conditions and intensive use all meet in exposed coastal locations. For a hotel terrace directly at the coast, we implemented a tailored shade solution for an open, south-facing outdoor area with uninterrupted views.
The initial situation
At the centre of the project was a long table with surrounding bench seating, regularly used by hotel guests. The terrace faces south and is therefore exposed to strong sunlight throughout the day. At the same time, the coastal location is subject to frequent and sometimes strong winds.
The goal was to create a solution that provides generous shade, remains flexible in daily use and integrates calmly into the surroundings – without restricting the open character of the terrace.
Planning the shade solution
Orientation played a key role in the planning phase. Due to the southern exposure, the position of the sun and the shadow changes significantly over the course of the day. The aim was to shade the seating area reliably for several hours without the need for constant repositioning.
At the same time, wind loads, frequency of use and limited space around the table had to be taken into account. A side-mounted shading solution proved to be the most suitable option for these conditions.
On-site installation
Installation took place directly on site at the North Sea. Given the wind conditions, a permanently anchored solution with a ground socket was chosen. This ensures a secure stand and a clean, unobtrusive appearance in the terrace area.
Transport and installation required careful coordination, as weather windows at the coast are often limited. After setting the ground socket, the cantilever umbrella was installed and precisely aligned with the seating area.
The result
Today, the terrace offers a clearly defined and pleasantly shaded outdoor space that can be used comfortably even under strong sunlight and changing coastal conditions. The long table with surrounding benches remains fully accessible, while the open view of the landscape is preserved.
This project highlights how important thoughtful planning and site-specific solutions are – especially in wind-exposed regions such as the North Sea coast.
Practical solutions are always the result of location, usage and experience working together.
